Sometimes a tooth has damage that is too extensive for a filling, but not extensive enough to require a crown. In this case, a dental inlay or onlay may be the perfect solution. An inlay sits between the tooth’s cusps, covering the center of its surface. An onlay covers one or more of the cusps, and possibly the entire chewing surface.
Dental inlays and onlays are most often made of dental porcelain, but could also be crafted from a cast gold alloy. Durability and appearance are the main factors that affect which material is selected.
How are inlays and onlays crafted and placed?
A dental inlay or onlay procedure requires two office visits. First, we will carefully remove the existing decayed or damaged areas of the tooth, and gently prepare it to receive the inlay or onlay.
Next, dental impressions are taken of the tooth. This ensures that the finished inlay or onlay will precisely fit the tooth, restoring its surface. The impressions are sent to the dental lab, and you will receive a temporary restoration to wear while your inlay or onlay is created.
When the final restoration is ready, you will return to the office to have it fitted and attached to your tooth with dental cement. Each appointment is normally about an hour long.
Choosing a dental inlay or onlay preserves as much healthy tooth structure as possible. They are beautiful esthetic options keeping the surrounding tissues and the adjacent teeth stable and secure, and restoring your ability to bite and chew normally.
