Since 1997, Invisalign has been billed as “the clear alternative to braces.” With no metal brackets or wires, Invisalign uses a custom-made series of clear, comfortable plastic aligners to gently guide your teeth into place. You must wear each aligner for 20 to 22 hours per day, for approximately two weeks, as instructed by your dentist. Invisalign treats the same conditions as braces, including gaps, crowding, overbites, and cross-bites. Yet it has several significant benefits.
Benefits of Invisalign
Computer Imaging: We use a 3-D digital model to show you exactly what to expect at each stage of treatment, including the final results. While this does take away from the “reveal” that people see when their braces are removed, it also provides the reassurance and peace of mind that comes with removing the guesswork.
Comfort and Aesthetics: Invisalign is virtually invisible, allowing you to wear it wherever you go without self-consciousness. The smooth plastic aligners are far more comfortable than braces, as there are no rough pieces of metal or wire. Some people feel a slight discomfort when the attachments are placed on their teeth, but this is typically minor and short-lived.
Lifestyle Considerations: Many foods are off-limits with braces, since they tend to get stuck in the brackets. With Invisalign, all you have to do is pop out the aligner and eat whatever you like. You can also brush and floss your teeth as normal, clean the aligner, and put it back in. If you play contact sports, ask your dentist whether you should take out the aligner or leave it in.
Less Risk of Oral Damage: Traditional braces are very difficult to clean around, increasing the risk for cavities. They also put a lot of force on your teeth. Scraping and demineralization are common. With Invisalign, the aligners are gentle and removable, minimizing the risks to your teeth.
Treatment Protocols: While braces wearers are frequently in the dentist’s office for adjustments, Invisalign users typically visit the office only once every four to six weeks. That’s because Invisalign uses a series of aligners that you can change yourself, at home, every two weeks or as instructed. This gives you control over the process, and fits more easily into a busy life. In addition, the total treatment time is generally far less for Invisalign than it is for braces.
At one time, braces were covered by dental insurance while Invisalign was not. Today, though, more and more insurance companies are discovering the value of Invisalign and are starting to cover it. In addition, Invisalign uses a transparent pricing system that lets you know exactly how much you will pay, including all office visits. Braces often require emergency visits for popped wires and other problems, which can significantly add to the final price. Speak with our office to determine your insurance coverage and discuss financing options for Invisalign.
